You can't beat Bakewell as a countryside idyll

You can't beat Bakewell as a countryside idyll

For beautiful scenery and picturesque towns and villages, it's very difficult to beat the wonderful Peak District, Britain's very first National Park.

And anyone on the lookout for a home in Derbyshire can't go wrong if they check out property for sale in Bakewell, a pretty little market town right on the River Wye.

This is a location that can be found in the Domesday Book and that has been holding its famous market since the 13th century. Today, there is still a thriving cattle market every Monday and a host of stalls for visitors and locals alike to browse in the town centre.

Of course, another thing Bakewell is famous for is its pudding - not to be confused with the Bakewell tart. A Bakewell Pudding is a jam pastry made from egg and featuring a ground almond filling, believed to have been invented by accident in the 19th century when a cook made a blunder in the kitchen.

It turned out to be a happy accident and you can still get Bakewell Puddings in several locations in the town - although you'd better be prepared to join a queue.

For people opting to live here, there are a number of employment opportunities close by, including jobs with the National Park Authority. However, Bakewell has excellent road links and is just 13 miles from Sheffield, 31 miles from Manchester and 21 miles from Derby, so is ideal for commuters too.

Bakewell may be a rural town, but there is lots to do apart from the market. Walkers will be in their element with rambling routes aplenty, including those in nearby Castleton with its caves and Shivering Mountain (Mam Tor), while shoppers won't be disappointed thanks to a number of retail arcades in the town centre.

The wells dressing is worth checking out each June, as is the hugely well-attended Agricultural Show, which is about much more than just farming.

And as if that isn't enough, Chatsworth House, Alton Towers, Arkwright's Mill and Carsington Water are all within easy reach for even more opportunities for days out.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801767580-ADNFCR
