Visit from Sir Ken marks first stage completion of fire-safety investment

Those looking for flats to rent in Southend-on-Sea will be please to know that flats in the town have undergone the first stage of a £3 million fire safety project.

The government’s leading Fire & Rescue Adviser, Sir Ken Knight, visited residents of a tower block in Southend this week to mark the completion of the stage. Measures include new fire prevention features as well as educating tenants on the role they can play in preventing fires.

Bewley Court has recently seen installed fire safety equipment including fire resistant communal doors, fire resistant paint and automatic bin room sprinklers. Tenants in the block have also had new fire resistant entrance doors fitted to their individual flats.

Sir Ken said: "There is always going to be a risk of fire at any property which is why measures such as those I’ve seen today are so important and that people know about how they can prevent fires in their homes and what to do if a fire occurs. I particularly welcome the fact that hard-wired smoke alarms have been fitted in this block of flats."

The remainder of the £3 million will be spent over the next four years.
