Torquay offers houses for sale on the English Riviera

Located in the unitary authority area of Torbay and the ceremonial county of Devon, Torquay is a beautiful town known for its dramatic stretches of coastline.

Indeed, the region's beauty has earned it the enviable nickname of "the English Riviera", leading to scores of holidaymakers heading down for their summer breaks and property seekers coveting houses for sale in Torquay.

As it is a seaside resort, Torquay is an ideal location for water sports such as surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and ocean kayaking. Other popular activities on offer include diving, sailing, angling and swimming.

The region has a long association with water sports, having been the location of the 1948 Summer Olympics, after the Olympic flame was brought from London to Torre Abbey Garden.

Houses for sale in Torquay are understandably much sought-after due to its idyllic location, which includes 19 beaches and coves and 22 miles of coastline. Many of Torquay's beaches have been awarded accolades for water quality and cleanliness.

For those who yearn for life by sea, Torquay is a veritable treat. The focus of town life lies on the waterfront, where local denizens converge to soak up the sun, sea and sand, and amble along tranquil gardens and palm-lined promenades.

A number of popular attractions lure in visitors, including Kents Cavern - a Stone Age site that was inhabited by early human populations - Living Coast, the Princess Theatre and Babbacombe Model Village.

Torquay's location also makes it an ideal starting point for trips to neighbouring south-west regions such as Plymouth, Exeter, Totnes and Dartmouth.

There are two main railway stations in town - Torquay railway station, which is located next to the sea and Torre railway station, which is slightly more inland. Torquay is also connected to the UK motorway network by the A380, which leads to the A38 and then to the M5 at Exeter. ADNFCR-1222-ID-800690697-ADNFCR
