Tenants reminded to check landlords out

Many tenants fail to ensure they are renting a property from a professional and reliable landlord, according to new research.

London-based removal firm Kiwi Movers is warning tenants in the capital to make sure they do the right background checks on their potential new landlord.

The study found 92 per cent of tenants looking a property in the city have a check done on them, but don’t do the same on the person who is renting them a home.

Regan McMillan, head of Kiwi Movers, said: “Rental properties are snapped up in a flash and most people know that if they want to secure a place to live, they need to act quickly. This means they simply don’t have time to check out a landlord and even if they did, I think a lot of them would take the risk just to get a place to live.”

He added: "As a nation, we probably take more care when buying a car than we do when choosing a person from whom to rent a home."

Overall, it was found just eight per cent of London residents do a background on their landlord, compared to the national average of 20 per cent.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801818746-ADNFCR
