Tenants prefer to decorate own homes

Many tenants would like to be able to decorate the properties they are renting, according to a new poll.

Insurance provider Endsleigh found many renters are willing to pay an additional payment if landlords would allow them to personalise their homes.

A total of 43 per cent involved in the research said they would be happy to pay more rent if they could decorate, but only 29 per cent said they do currently have the freedom to do so.

The most popular decorating desire was to paint the walls with a colour of their choice, followed by many tenants who wished to be able to hang pictures or mirrors using screws and those who would like to change the wallpaper.

"With it being so difficult to get on to the property ladder, people are now renting for longer, so naturally they are going to want to decorate the property they are living in long term," said David Hadden, manager for landlords and lettings at Endsleigh.

He added: "Landlords who allow tenants to personalise their property could be favoured over those who don’t and may be able to command a higher rental price. If tenants feel at home in their property they may also have longer tenancies."ADNFCR-1222-ID-801805994-ADNFCR
