Support needed for landlords with housing benefit tenants

Buy to let landlords may need support from the government to help cater for tenants who claim housing benefit.

The British Property Federation (BPF) is calling for ministers to return to direct payment for landlords with local housing allowance (LHA) tenants.

Recent research by the BPF revealed that 88.3 per cent of landlords would not reduce rent to housing benefit tenants despite planned government cuts to the LHA.

The National Landlords Association says landlords are not in a financial position to cut rent even if they wanted to keep good tenants.

Vincenzo Rampulla, spokesman at NLA says benefit cuts may see some landlords forced out of the market.

He said: "[Landlords] are going to have to pull out of the market because it is just not going to make financial sense for them to keep renting to LHA [local housing allowance] tenants."

The government need to prepare themselves for this, he added.ADNFCR-1222-ID-800383941-ADNFCR
