Rental sector report welcomed

Rental sector report welcomed

An organisation representing thousands of buy-to-let investors and other landlords has said it largely welcomes a law commission report calling for improved regulation of the private rented sector.

In Housing: Encouraging Responsible Letting, the commission has argued that new regulatory measures need to be in place to raise the standard in the industry.

Proposals include the establishment of a housing standards monitor, a stakeholder board on which all interested parties are represented, a pilot scheme for home condition reports and the setting up of a landlord accreditation scheme in every local authority area.

Responding to this, the National Landlord's Association (NLA) said many of the ideas were good ones, particularly the involvement of local authorities in regulation.

NLA chairman David Salusbury said: "In fact, further enhancing good practice to build on voluntary self-regulation can only be a good thing for both landlords and tenants."
