Newent: Beautiful Gloucestershire market town

Market towns offer a lifestyle that is the perfect compromise between city and village life. If you are looking to downshift, but are not quite ready for rural life, why not take a look at property for sale in Newent.

The pretty market town of Newent lies within the Forest of Dean. The town’s picture perfect centre is a conservation area, with a half-timbered market house originally built in 1668 as a butter market. In more recent times, the town boasts a golden post box outside the Post Office to celebrate Charlotte Dujardin winning Olympic Gold at the London Olympics in the individual equestrian dressage event on her horse Valegro.

The main event in the calendar is the annual Onion Fayre, held in September as a celebration of the first day of harvest at the end of the summer. The one-day fayre is a street festival of food, drink, music and merriment and attracts almost 15,000 visitors.

The surrounding countryside turns into a riot of colour every Spring, with wild daffodils which grow naturally in the woods and meadows around the town. Such is the attraction of the flowers that organised daffodil walks take place each spring around the villages of Dymock, Kempley and Oxenhall. Newent is also home to the National Birds of Prey Centre. The Centre houses over 200 birds of prey, eagles, owls, vultures, kites, buzzards and falcons and is set in beautiful gardens.

Other highlights of the town include the likes of Newent Leisure Centre, which hosts a swimming pool, a gymnasium and a multi-purpose hall which can be used for the likes of tennis, badminton and other sports.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801824474-ADNFCR
