Mortgage lending figures reach their best since 2008

Mortgage lending in the UK has been improving over the last year since the introduction of the Funding for Lending Scheme, and this has continued throughout the early part of summer, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).

The company said that lending figures are now at their best at any time since 2008 as they continued to grow in July.

Throughout the month, it said that lending in total was sat at £16.6 billion, a 12 per cent increase since June when it sat at £14.8 billion.

These figures also showed an impressive annual growth of 29 per cent, showing the power of governmental help over the last 12 months.

"An improvement in sentiment and activity continues to show in the UK housing and mortgage markets, with a more positive picture also starting to emerge in the economy," said CML market and data analyst Caroline Purdy.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801627931-ADNFCR
