More homes under construction

There has been a record number of homes being built in England, according to new figures.

Data from the department for communities and local government (DCLG) shows a total of 122,590 homes were started last year - the highest number since 2007 and a 23 per cent increase on 2012 levels.

However, there was a fall of five per cent for the number of homes actually being completed compared to the previous year.

Almost 13,000 of the properties ready for sale were part of the government's Help to Buy equity loans scheme.

Housing charity Shelter told BBC News it welcomed the figures but stressed more needs to be done to meet the national shortage in homes.

"With thousands of young people and families already beginning to give up hope that they will ever be able to afford a home of their own, this woeful gap between the homes we need and the homes we have spells disaster for future generations," said Campbell Robb, Shelter's chief executive.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801696278-ADNFCR
