Incentives needed to create greener houses for sale in 2011

More incentives are needed to create eco-friendly houses for sale in 2011, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

The FMB says reduced VAT rates for home energy efficiency improvements and reduced Stamp Duty should be at the centre of the government's upcoming budget.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the FMB, says home improvement loans offered as part of the Green Deal are not enough to make existing homes more eco friendly.

He said: "What is needed is a range of targeted incentives to encourage householders to take the steps that are necessary.

"A reduced rate of VAT to five per cent for all energy efficiency ... projects would provide that boost."

Sustain Worldwide agrees that more incentives are needed to create more energy efficient homes.

The sustainable development organisation says incentivised schemes are "essential".

However, more education on why energy efficiency is important is also needed, say the firm.

Highlighting benefits such as reduced fuel bills, increased energy security and reduced CO2 emissions could help homeowners adopt necessary measures.ADNFCR-1222-ID-800420633-ADNFCR
