The county has been revealed as one of the most affordable parts of England for those trying to get onto the property ladder.

According to SHIP Equity Release, houses for sale in Yorkshire are an average of £100,829 for first-time buyers, compared to £244,557 for first-time buyer properties in London.

The average deposit needed by people buying their first home is £23,191 in Yorkshire compared to £56,248 in London.

Houses for sale in Yorkshire may also see a surge of interest after two of the region's towns were judged among some of the nation's favourites.

York topped the Rough Guides poll of Britain's favourite small cities and towns, with Whitby coming in seventh place.
