Houses for sale in London continue to top price list

Property for sale in London continues to be among the most expensive in the country, new figures show.

The capital city has the highest average house prices in England, at £342,062, the Department for Communities and Local Government has revealed.

According to the department's latest house price index, London's average house price was above the UK average in April.

In addition, the price of homes in the south-east and south-west of England were also above average.

Overall, UK house prices decreased by 1.1 per cent over April, with the average price now standing at £204,439.

First-time buyers paid 1.6 per cent less on average during the month compared to those getting onto the property ladder in April 2010.

Landlords with property to rent in London may be able to increase their income next year as tourists head to the city for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympic Games.

Short-term lets could prove beneficial to buy-to-let investors looking to fill rental voids.ADNFCR-1222-ID-800580238-ADNFCR
