House prices 'up 8% on last April'

Property prices in the UK are up considerably compared with April last year, new figures show.

According to the latest Halifax House Price Index, there has been an increase of eight per cent during this time.

The firm noted that this worked out at a typical rise of £12,367 and the average house price was recorded at £166,857 last month .

However, February's figure was slightly down on the previous month, Halifax noted.

There was a drop from January of 1.5 per cent, it said, citing the fact that more properties are now on estate agents' books as one factor behind this.

Bad weather and the end of the stamp duty holiday may also have played a part, it claimed.

On December 31st, the break on the levy was removed by the Labour adminitration, meaning homes worth more than £125,000 are once again subject to the tax.
