Highgate: Exclusive city suburb

Highgate is one of the greenest areas in London, offering wide open spaces within a short commute of the city centre. Green expanses in the area include a section of Hampstead Heath, Waterlow Park, three ancient woods, and the eastern-facing slopes known as Highgate bowl.

Originally named after a large gate in a deer-proof hedge surround the bishop of London’s private hunting grounds, Highgate is now charming place to live and work, retaining many Georgian buildings and listed landmarks. Its location on the top of a hill gives it great views across the London.

The area mixes a traditional atmosphere with a range of amenities, restaurants, bars and shops. Well-known local gastropubs include the Wrestlers, the Red Lion & Sun and The Bull.  On a practical day-to-day basis, there is a choice of supermarkets, including Waitrose and Sainsburys, and mix of national and independent retailers.

Local landmarks include Highgate Cemetery, resting place of Karl Marx. The 37-acre site is said to hold the remains of over 170,000 people and offers daily tours.

Highgate has fantastic transport links into central London. Highgate Station is on the Northern Line of the London Underground, providing frequent trains into the city every morning, making the daily commute a breeze. There are also a number of bus links also serving the area, including the N20 night bus.
