Handy hints for student renters

A government-approved tenancy deposit protection scheme is offering advice to students renting a property for the first time.

Mydeposits.co.uk recommends that all university students ask their landlord which one of three authorised deposit protection schemes is protecting their money - and insist on seeing proof.

Eddie Hooker, company chief executive, said that moving into one's first student house is always exciting but that in the whirlwind of Freshers' Week and adjusting to university life, students should also think about the practicalities of living away from home.

"Keeping things clean and tidy and encouraging your housemates to do the same might seem like a waste of time but it's worth doing," he stated.

The news comes after research by Propertyfinder.com showed that last year's property hotspots for both buyers and renters included student towns such as Cambridge and Southampton, with 16 of the top 20 towns rated by those looking to rent also home to universities.
