HBF: More mortgage lending is a priority

Increasing mortgage lending is a priority for the housing market, according to the Home Builders Federation (HBF).

The organisation is hopeful that the government's schemes to help kick-start lending start working in "the next few months".

Steve Turner, head of communications at the trade association, called on politicians to "push through" the measures to give impetus to this important part of the property market.

"The crux of the issue in terms of the housing market is getting banks lending again at sensible rates to people who want to buy homes," he explained.

Last week, the National Association of Estate Agents revealed that confidence in the housing market was up in April, with the average agent reportedly selling ten properties during the course of the month.

This figure was up two from March's figure and an improvement on record lows from last winter.
