HBF: Govt 'must increase supply' of property for sale

The government needs to loosen planning regulations to increase the supply of houses for sale in Devon and other parts of the country, the Home Builders Federation (HBF) has said.

It comes after housing minister Grant Shapps met with the National Self Build Association to announce a new action plan to make it more attractive for people to construct their own homes.

According to Mr Shapps, the UK has one of the lowest proportions of new homes build by self-builders in Europe.

Steve Turner, spokesman for the HBF, said there is an "acute shortage" of housing in the country and any measures to improve it should be welcomed, but warned this plan will not resolve the situation by itself.

"Mortgage availability remains the biggest short-term constraint on house building and housing provision and we've got to address the planning system," he added.

"The government is currently in the process of introducing a new planning system."ADNFCR-1222-ID-800631914-ADNFCR
