Government 'must support buy to let landlords'

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has called on the coalition government to back the buy to let sector to ensure that it is not adversely affected by the cuts outlined in the comprehensive spending review.

Chancellor George Osborne confirmed his intention to reduce housing benefit yesterday (October 20th 2010), but NLA chairman David Salusbury suggested this could provide opportunities for buy to let landlords.

"It is clear that the social housing sector will not be able to meet current demand by itself," he said. "The government must now put in place a strategy to incentivise the growth of the private rented sector."

Mr Salusbury added that the cutbacks in social housing will provide the buy to let market with additional challenges and urged the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to reconsider cutting housing allowance rates.

Earlier this month, British Property Federation chief executive Liz Peace said the government should do more to stimulate development.ADNFCR-1222-ID-800135169-ADNFCR
