Estate agents suggest regions give the clearest housing market picture

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has suggested that in order to get a clear idea of the state of the housing market, people should look at the regional picture.

Commenting on the latest data from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the organisation said it is important to keep negative figures in perspective.

Although the RICS house price balance improved slightly in May, it still remained depressed with 92.9 per cent more of its members reporting a fall than a rise in house prices.

That overall figure masks regional variations however, with some areas faring worse than others, such as the south-east and East Anglia where chartered surveyors were unanimous in reporting falling house prices.

In a statement the NAEA said: "The picture is mixed across the country and some areas will be more affected than others, so people really need to look to their local markets to get a true picture."
