Economy will remain healthy, says chancellor

The chancellor Alastair Darling remains upbeat on the economy and prospects for growth this year, as well as the property market.

Mr Darling made the remarks on the Today Programme broadcast on Radio 4 and said that despite predictions from the International Monetary Fund that economic growth will be slow, Britain is in a good position to deal with this.

He suggested that by collaborating with other countries then the negative impacts of the credit crunch may well be diminished.

And he asserted that the government needs to do "everything it possibly can" in order to assist the housing market and give support to homeowners.

"That means making sure we support the housing market but also making sure we support the wider economy, keeping people in work," he commented.

According to data released by Halifax this month, UK property prices fell by 2.5 per cent in March, the biggest nationwide drop for 12 years.ADNFCR-1222-ID-18545103-ADNFCR
