Confused.com: Home insurance should cover pet damage

People planning to buy houses for sale in 2011 may need to consider the potential damage a pet could cause in their new home.

Pets are responsible for approximately £690 worth of damage to the average owner's household, according to research by Confused.com.

The comparison site is now calling for home insurance providers to include pet damage within their policies, and has launched an online petition.

No major provider currently covers accidental damage caused by domestic animals – yet up to one fifth of pet owners have experience "significant damage" to their homes in the last year.

Mark Gabriel, head of home insurance at Confused.com, said: "The findings of this study send a clear message to insurance providers that there is a real need for tailored home insurance products for pet owners."

People looking for houses to rent in the UK would need to check with landlords before moving a pet into their new home.

Some rental agreements do not allow animals to stay in rental properties.ADNFCR-1222-ID-800425984-ADNFCR
