Christchurch offers downsizing opportunities

The Dorset town of Christchurch is perfect for retired people who are looking to downsize.

Recent years have seen an increase in older people who are looking to relocate to take advantage of varying property prices and perhaps reduce their outgoings.

According to a survey by Prudential, 26 per cent of people aged over 55 are considering downsizing and some might consider property for sale in Christchurch.

One of the features of the town is its strong community and it has a weekly market that offers some of the region's best food and drink, as well as lots of other local goods - it is also a good opportunity to meet new people and make friends.

Christchurch also occasionally hosts French markets and other street events that may appeal to retired shoppers.

The town sits on the rivers Avon and Stour and has its own harbour, making it an ideal setting for those who enjoy sailing and fishing pursuits.

Of course, there is the nearby World Heritage Jurassic coastline to enjoy but there are plenty of other must-see sights such as an old Norman motte and bailey style castle and a mansion named Highcliffe Castle, which is built on the edge of a cliff.

One of the annual highlights in the town is a food and wine festival, which includes over 100 different stalls selling food and drinks, as well as a large kitchen area where cooking demonstrations are given by chefs, which have included celebrities such as Gary Rhodes and Jean-Christophe Novelli in previous years.

Residents can also enjoy the yearly regatta that has taken place in Christchurch's harbour since 1909. The event is a popular one and features a number of processions and a fantastic fireworks display.

Music fans could also be tempted by the local folk festival, which has now recently opened its programme to include rock bands and takes places every year at the start of July.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801698476-ADNFCR
