Buy to let demand 'on the increase'

Demand for buy to let properties is continuing to rise sharply and optimism among landlords remains particularly strong, according to new research from property firm Paragon.

The latest Paragon Private Rented Sector Trends report has revealed that the number of people looking to rent buy to let homes rose the three months until September, with many buyers facing increasing difficulty in obtaining mortgages.

"Many landlords have tenants competing for their properties," said Paragon Group chief executive Nigel Pearson. "This level of demand has been exacerbated by the low levels of mortgage lending in the owner-occupier market."

Mr Pearson added that the third quarter of the year is traditionally a particularly busy time for the buy to let market, with many second-year students making the move from university accommodation to privately-owned houses and flats.

Last week, LSL Property Services revealed that the average monthly rent for British buy to let homes reached £698 in September. ADNFCR-1222-ID-800127379-ADNFCR
