Bury St Edmunds offers great market town living

The Suffolk market town of Bury St Edmunds is ideal for families looking to settle down away from the larger cities.

Being home to one of the oldest weekly street markets in the country means the town has a great community feel and offers a real alternative to busier and more impersonal locations.

There is one train station in the area and services run seven days a week, every two hours to nearby Peterborough and hourly to the cities of Ipswich and Cambridge.

With a wide choice of property for sale in Bury St Edmunds, the town has a lot to benefit families moving into the area.

Educational options are strong, with parents able to pick from a whole host of very different schools. Many operate under a three-tier system that is unique to Suffolk and the region is home to a number of top-performing institutions, such as King Edward VI, St Benedict's and County Upper School.

Fans of the arts will not be disappointed by Bury St Edmunds' Theatre Royal. It is a popular venue for top touring companies and is the last remaining Regency-style theatre in the whole of the UK.

Other popular venues in the town include the Moyse's Hall Museum, which focuses on social and local history exhibitions, while Smith's Row is a contemporary art gallery situated in the old Market Cross area.

There are also some great places to eat and drink in the town. Bury St Edmunds is home to the country's smallest pub. Called the Nutshell, around ten to 15 drinkers can fit into the tiny 15 feet by seven feet establishment, although in 1984, it is believed that 104 people squeezed themselves into the one-room bar.

Other popular restaurants and bars include Pea Porridge, the Angel and Benson Blakes.

For anyone wanting to indulge in some retail therapy, Bury St Edmunds is home to a modern shopping mall. Built in 2009, the award-winning Arc has more than 30 shops and a large number of parking spaces.ADNFCR-1222-ID-801694499-ADNFCR
